Slipper Removal by Charlie Immer
Charlie Immer is a fine artist and an illustrator. His work has been shown across the nation and has been featured in HiFructose and Juxtapoz magazines. We recently had a chance to talk with Charlie about his latest RUN, what artists inspire him and what he has on the horizon. 1xRUN: Tell us a bit about Slippery Removal, when was this piece created? How long did it take to make?
Charlie Immer: This print is of a painting that was a part of my show, “Bone Jiggle”, at Roq La Rue this past October. I tend to work on a bunch of pieces at a time so it’s a bit difficult to pinpoint exactly how long it took. If I had to guess, I would say 3 weeks from sketch to finish.
Sometimes I like to think that this painting involves a surrogate for me who gets to touch gross juicy stuff without throwing up or dealing with any bizarre smells. I also have this fear that under my skin my organic processes are just a mess and I would like a more direct way of sorting things out.
1xRUN: What is especially unique about this print?
Charlie Immer: Where else will you see sherbet slimed skulls getting optically fondled by a psychedelic maraca?
1xRUN: Describe this print in one gut reaction word for us.
Charlie Immer: Eye-popping.
1xRUN: What artists inspired you early on?
Charlie Immer: Leonardo’s anatomical studies were a huge inspiration to me when I first started drawing in elementary school. Mark Ryden was the first contemporary artist who made me want to be a professional artist. It made me confident that there is an audience for more strange and mysterious work.
1xRUN: What artists inspire you now?
Charlie Immer: Travis Lampe, Dave Cooper and Jim Woodring constantly knock my socks, shoes, and glasses off.
1xRUN: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what?
Charlie Immer: I listen to a lot of music while I work. Right now I’ve been listening to the Tim and Eric CD, along with the instrumentals from the Fantastic Mr. Fox OST. Ratatat is also a staple on my playlists and has been for about 5 years.
Charlie Immer: I recently got my first real painting from Travis Lampe. It’s really boss. I have it hung prominently in my studio/bedroom.
1xRUN: What else do you have in the works currently?
Charlie Immer: I have a piece in the upcoming “About Face” show at the WWA gallery in Los Angeles on Friday, January 13th and a painting at the Oceanic Awareness Collaboration show at the White Walls gallery on February 18th. I’ve also got a painting I’m playing with right now which has a bunch of new elements in it. When it’s done it should be really neat.
