"This piece is part of our current series OVERTHRONE! Our first show in this series will debut at Stolen Space Gallery in London, the title of the first show is OVERTHRONE! POORING REIGN. The series explores symbols of power and the reign they have over our minds. We take these symbols of power and deconstruct them by either scrambling, glitching, redacting, or simply flipping them upside down in attempt to suggest overthrowing the reigns of power. The subliminal meaning of OVERTHRONE! is a call to action…to overthrow the powers of doubt and oppression in the mind, to let go of fear and take the power back!

The idea was conceived through the concept of OVERTHRONE! We have been studying and exploring ancient Greek and Roman art/sculptures that glorify power. Aesthetically we are returning to our roots…bitmapped imagery married with text. You can hang it upside down if you dare." - Cyrcle

Cyrcle Debuts With Rape of Sabine OVERTHRONE!

1xRun Thru Interview
Rape of Sabine OVERTHRONE! by Cyrcle

1xRun: Tell us a little bit about this piece, is the original still for sale?
Cyrcle: The piece was created exclusively as a print for 1xRun, however we may paint it as a mural if we can find a wall to accommodate the proportions of the piece.

1xRun: Was this piece part of a recent theme, series or show that you had? If so how did it fit into that given grouping?
Cyrcle: Yes, this piece is part of our current series OVERTHRONE! 1xRUN: When was this piece drawn and created and with what materials?
Cyrcle: This piece was created in January 2014 using a mix of a digital reappropriation of a photograph of a sculpture of the Rape of Sabine.

1xRun: Anything you would like us to highlight?
Cyrcle: The word behind the image is REIGN!

1xRun: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?
Cyrcle: The idea was conceived through the concept of OVERTHRONE! We have been studying and exploring ancient Greek and Roman art/sculptures that glorify power. Aesthetically we are returning to our roots…bitmapped imagery married with text.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Cyrcle: We cannot answer this sensitive question. In our opinion the question should be how long did this concept take to develop. For us it makes no difference the amount of time spent executing art. We are interested in the meaning and concept behind the work. OVERTHRONE! as a concept was developed over two years ago. Our first example was a mural with a massive upside down crown we painted in LA. The best way we could answer the question would be to say several years.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Cyrcle: You can hang it upside down if you dare ;)

1xRun: Why should people buy this print?
Cyrcle: This piece is the first print released in the OVERTHRONE! concept.

1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Cyrcle: OVERTHRONE! cyrcle-1xRUN-rape-of-sabine-blog-hero1xRun: This will be your first year joining the Pow Wow Hawaii family, who are some of the artists you’re really excited to see painting out there?
Cyrcle: We are stoked to see them all! And of course our good friends Gaia, Dave Kinsey, Tristan Eaton, MEGGS, Woes, Yoskay, Rone and Vhils.

1xRun: Have you been to Hawaii before or will this be your first time out there? What are you looking forward to?
Davey: I went there when I was two years old and only remember vomiting in the plane.
Rabi: This will be my first time, and I’m super excited for the weather and epic waters. Love projects that involve groups of creatives, anytime you have the chance to paint in a new environment with friends and like minded people it becomes more than painting. The art is shared on so many levels, It becomes inspiration for everyone. Like when people say “you’re not really living” this would be the definition of really living!! ;)

1xRun: Do you have any plans for your wall out there or are you just going to improvise it when you get there?
Cyrcle: We always have a plan. We will be painting with the OVERTHRONE! concept.

1xRun: You’ve been staying crazy busy per usual, bring us up to speed on some of the walls you’ve been doing lately?
Cyrcle: We painted a mural in Los Angeles which was collaboration with the musical genius and good friend Woodkid from Paris. We painted a mural in Wynwood for Art Basel Miami. We finished an installation mural at the Aria hotel Las Vegas.

1xRun: How did 2013 wrap up for you?
Cyrcle: It was incredible! However 2014 will be even better!

1xRun: Aside from Pow Wow 2014, what are your plans for the new year?
Cyrcle: We are designing a bar on the top floor of the new Ovolo hotel in Hong Kong as well as beginning the manufacturing process of our fashion line BLACK CYRCLE. We hope to launch the line Winter 2014 as well as open our first flagship store in Hong Kong. We are collaborating with Blackman Cruz on a furniture capsule collection. We are releasing our fashion capsule collections for Billionaire Boys Club and DC Shoes. We released our first episode (volume 1) of our artist profile series DOUGLYFE and will continue to develop more content as we travel. We have a solo show titled OVERTHRONE! POORING REIGN at Stolen Space Gallery in London in March. We are painting murals in Hong Kong, London, Vancouver, Munich and Vienna. We are exhibiting our second installment of the OVERTHRONE! series at Corey Helford Gallery in LA in September, title TBD. And that’s all we know as of now :)

About the Artist

Location: Los Angeles, California

CYRCLE is a two-man collective born out of Los Angeles, California in 2010. Their work focuses on life, duality, and the human condition. Those concepts, combined with the aesthetic consideration of form, type face, color, and balance are what creates their signature style. Through street campaigns, design, fine art, murals, and collaborations, their work blurs the lines within the contemporary art world. CYRCLE reveals complex ideologies in their simplest forms. Refusing to constrain themselves to a particular definition- street artists, graphic designers, traditional fine artists- the collective is interested in what the function and form of the work itself demands. Living by the motto We Never Die, CYRCLE strives to shed light on otherwise dark matters, thoughtfully exposing the gray areas of life.

We left our families.
We abandoned our homes.
We worked for nothing.
We slept on floors.
We partied hard.
We lost our minds.
We danced with the Devil.
We faced our fears.
We swallowed our pride.
We gave our hearts.
We tried and failed.
We followed our dreams.
We are CYRCLE.
We Never Die!
