"I started out after school hoping to become a commercial illustrator. I then discovered very quickly that my work is not what one would call commercial unless I subtract the Blood and Guts. It’s no fun without the gore.” – Charlie Immer, Sunrise Artists interview.
As we see in Jelly Face, most of Charlie's work plays with the juxtaposition of Happy and Dark. The bright rainbow colors suggest a happy scene, but those colors only mask the gore and innards of Charlie's characters. He plays with your emotions in this painting. The smooth, rainbow-colored skin splits open to show a smiling skull that is dripping with candy apple colored “Jelly.” You may be a little grossed-out, but you’re also smiling.
Charlie has shown at Gallery 1988 as well as having a huge solo show at Roq La Rue. His work has even been featured in Hi-Fructose Magazine. We'd say he's on a fast train art super stardom.Discuss This Run
