By using to the iconography of today and yesterday's popular culture, Casey Weldon's work aims to awaken a feelings of nostalgia within the viewer, though often along with a sense humor, melancholy, and longing for times lost.

We are excited to welcome back Casey Weldonfor his 4th RUN as he brings us the his latest floating painting "It's In The Air".

"A lot of people react to the vision of blood differently. I think there is an instinctual feeling of repulsiveness that most humans have. Usually if you see blood, it does not mean a good thing. Of course blood is such a prevalent part of pop culture these days, with a lot of movies and video games featuring so much of it that it becomes campy gore. I wanted to try and paint a picture that included a lot of blood, but was neither repulsive or gory, but beautiful and confusing. I honestly can't say where the idea originally came from, but I remember always having a vision of a woman quizzically touching floating blobs of liquid. I've been slightly obsessed with using blood vessels as other things, like in the place of hair or plant life. I liked the idea of a fur coat made out of the endings of blood vessels, and decided to pair the two for extra bloodiness." - Casey Weldon

1xRUN Thru Interview

It’s In The Air by Casey Weldon

1xRun:  Tell us a little bit about the original? Is it still for sale?
Casey Weldon:  The original piece is acrylic on wood and it was painted in August of 2012. The piece was for a show curated by the artist collective I am a part of, Prisma. The show was simply centered around the theme “Blood”. The original is sold.

1xRun: How long did the piece take?
Casey Weldon:  About 3 solid days of painting.

1xRun: What is unique about this piece?
Casey Weldon:  It was certainly my first time painting floating blobs of blood and it was a lot harder than I anticipated.

1xRun: Why should people buy this piece/print?
Casey Weldon:  If they find it to be a beautiful way of depicting something we are usually so afraid of, or if they just like the colors.

1xRun: Describe the piece in one gut reaction word.
Casey Weldon:  Blood.

1xRun: When did you first start making art?

Casey Weldon: Whenever Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a cartoon. For the first time.

1xRun: What was your first piece?

Casey Weldon: That I remember liking? A pretty sweet copy of Shredder from the Eastman and Laird books.

1xRun: What artists inspired you early on?

Casey Weldon: I was really big on comic books, mainly for the art. Todd McFarlane, Sam Keith & Simon Bisley.

1xRun: What artists inspire you now?

Casey Weldon: There are so many, and it’s so easy to find now with this internet thing. Honestly I can go to ffffound.com or tumblr and get lost in clicking for hours and days and weeks.

1xRun: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what? If not then what is your environment like when you work?

Casey Weldon: A lot of music, a lot of audiobooks and podcasts. Nerdist, WTF, Who Charted?, Radiolab, Comedy Bang Bang. I am a music glutton, and usually have the radio set to KCRW or KEXP or Radio Nova. I’ll listen to any book someone recommends, unless it is a teen trilogy.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?

Casey Weldon: Michel Gondry. His work is so wild and lo fi, and rely on the idea rather than the flourish.

1xRun: If you could collaborate with any deceased artists who would it be and why?

Casey Weldon: Egon Schiele, because I often feel very stiff and the gesture that is in his every stroke is something I aspire to someday be able to match.

1xRun: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?

Casey Weldon: I bought a Robotech animation cell at ComicCon that I cherished when I was a tween. It was destroyed in the Northridge earthquake.

1xRun: What was the last piece of art that you bought?

Casey Weldon: I bought a small painting of a dog by Allison Sommers. If you know her work, then you know there is a lot more to it than just a dog.

1xRun: What else do you have in the works?

Casey Weldon: I have a 2 person show at Distinction Art this November, and a solo show at Trifecta Gallery in Las Vegas early 2013. I also have a ton of group shows all over the place in the meantime.
