Grapefruit Macaron by Kukula

1xRUN: We’re excited for this special release of Grapefruit Macaron on 1xRUN, can you tell us a little about this painting and why it was selected to be released along with this limited edition frame print combo?

Kukula: I’m so exited to have the opportunity to have a print made so similar in size and presentation to the original. I love the Grapefruit Macaron portrait because I feel it gives you the feeing of something sweet but with a terrible after taste, like grapefruit, and just like macaron, at first it just looks like a pretty cookie, but it is much more complex than that.

1xRUN: Is the original still for sale?

Kukula:  Nope, it is sold.

1xRUN: What materials were the original drawn or created with and when?

Kukula: It was created in April 2012, the original was oil on MDF.

1xRUN: Tell us how the idea and execution came about?

Kukula:  This painting is a part of a series in which I’m trying to fuse together the love for beauty and objects with the consumer herself to the point they become one.

1xRUN: How long did the piece take?

Kukula:  About a week or so.

Kukula:  Because they think it’s pretty.

1xRUN: You’ve moved around the states quite a bit and are currently overseas, tell us a little about why you choose these places and where you’re currently getting set up lately?

Kukula:  I’m actually setting up in Philadelphia. I didn’t choose it, my husband is doing his post doctorate there. At the moment I’m homeless traveling a little and will have a place only in September.

1xRUN: You’re currently abroad in Israel, can you give us a little info on what you’re working on there?

Kukula: I’m designing my art book. I’m creating hand drawn embellishments in ink. It’s the first time in years that in working in ink, I love it but it is so frustrating.

1xRUN: You’ve shown at some of the best low brow galleries in the world, including Corey Helford, Roc La Rou and CoproNason. These are amazing opportunities and open up your work to a refined collector base, can you give us some insight on these experiences?

Kukula: The people at these galleries are always very interesting and smart and when I started I learned a lot from them. More than I ever learned from other artists.

1xRUN: What else do you have in the works? Can you give us a run down on what coming up in the next few months?

Kukula: I’m working on a book, this December I’m showing in Miami with Corey Helford at a mini solo show and my next solo show will be much later in 2013.

1xRUN: When did you first start making art?

Kukula:   When I realized I’ll never going to be a professional assassin.

1xRUN: What was your first piece?

Kukula:   A girl holding her heart in a jar

1xRUN: What artists inspired you early on?

Kukula:  When I was growing up in the 80′s I was extremely obsessed with the pop culture of illustrated characters as Care Bears, Strweberry Shortcake, Holly Hobbie and so on and was constantly trying to drew them. I think it was very meaningful to who I am as an artist today as stupid as it may sound.

1xRUN: What artists inspire you now?

Kukula:   dead aristocrats, Ellen Von Unwerth and fine sweets.

1xRUN: Do you listen to music while you work? If so what? If not then what is your environment like when you work?

Kukula:   I sometimes listen to music and sometime watch movies. I like so many kinds so I don’t really want to get into it.

1xRUN: If you could collaborate with any living artist who would it be and why?

Kukula:   Ellen Von Unwerth and Karl Lagerfeld.

Kukula:   Oscar Wilde.

1xRUN: What was the first piece of art that you bought? Do you still have it?

Kukula:  A piece from Junko Mizuno, It was about a year ago.

1xRUN: What was the last piece of art that you bought?

Kukula:  I think it was one more Junko Mizuno. One page from a graphic novel
